Chapter 9

Gabe stood in the doorway of the small bungalow, his stomach fluttering with nerves for which he was extremely pissed off. He was meeting the father of the man who was his ticket back into heaven. Why should he care what Josh’s father thought of him? The only person who mattered was Josh.

And yet here he was, ready to throw up because he was about to meet Josh’s father.

Josh glanced back at him, looking equally nervous. “Come on, Gabe. When my dad asks for a command performance, you obey.”

A delicious smell assaulted his nose, vaguely familiar. “Your father is cooking?”

A fond smile crossed Josh’s face. “Yeah. My mom died when I was very young. The only meal my dad has ever mastered is breakfast. I pretty much grew up on bacon, eggs, and hash browns. I’m surprised I didn’t have a heart attack before I was eighteen, actually.”

A booming voice sounded from somewhere deeper in the house. “Joshua, get your butt in here and help your old man with the eggs.”

Rolling his eyes, Josh seized his arm and dragged him along to the kitchen. “Old man, my ass,” Josh countered as he let go of Gabe and walked over to his father and took control of the frying pan. “You’ll never get old, Dad. There’s too much spit and vinegar in you.”

The older man laughed, and Gabe was struck by the love shining in his eyes as he looked at his son. A sense of yearning to be loved to such an extent assaulted him, one he couldn’t shake off easily.

He let out a breath as father and son continued their banter, forcing himself to focus on his ultimate goal. Re-entry into heaven. Right. He could do this.

He glanced back again at Josh and his father, standing hip to hip at the stove, each with a spatula in his hand. At least when Gabe ascended to heaven because Josh had given up his career for him, Josh would have a support system in place. The thought didn’t make him feel any better about the whole damn thing, and he frowned harder. Why was he feeling so sad?

“You all right, son? You look a little green around the gills.”

Gabe blinked, completely surprised to find Josh’s father standing right in front of him, an expression of concern on his handsome face. Wow. It was like looking at an older Josh, except with dark brown hair. If Josh continued to follow in his father’s footsteps as far as looks, he would be a looker even into his late fifties.

“Ah, yes, s-s-sir,” he stammered, blushing hotly. He’d never once stammered before. “I guess I’m just nervous.” It was the truth, even though he wasn’t really sure what he was nervous about.

The older man’s eyes twinkled mischievously. “I had one of my buddies down at the station run a background check on you. You came back as clean as a whistle. So, as long as you treat my Josh right, there’s nothing to be nervous about.
